Earth Day is a global event celebrated on April 22 by more than 1 billion people in 192 countries every year. This year, April 22, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day celebration which was founded in 1970.

Today, the theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action.

Earth Day Network stated, “The enormous challenge — but also the vast opportunities — of action on climate change have distinguished the issue as the most pressing topic for the 50th anniversary. Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable.”

On Earth Day 2020, we will face two crises: One is immediate from COVID-19 pandemic. The other is slowly building as a disaster for our climate.

We can, will, and must solve both challenges. The world was not prepared for the novel coronavirus. Leaders ignored hard science and delayed critical actions. We still have time to prepare — in every part of the world — for the climate crisis.

This pandemic will not silence our voices. Instead, it reminds us of what is at stake for the planet. Although it is keeping us apart, it is also bringing us together to take on the fight for our common home.

As we mark 50 years, let us celebrate Earth Day unlike any other. Three ways to take action as Earth Day goes digital.
